CM Punk, as of today is the most divisive character in the world of Pro wrestling. On one hand the entire fan base of WWE hates him, while on the other hand, AEW fans adore him as the greatest pro wrestler ever.
In such a landscape, CM Punk has just returned from an injury and is currently embroiled in a feud with interim AEW champion Jon Moxley. On the last week’s episode of Dynamite, Punk called out Mox and the two gave an entertaining segment but it was something that happened at the start of that segment which has taken the world of pro wrestling by a storm.
Summer of Punk
CM Punk became the AEW world champion by defeating Hangman Adam Page. Just after that match at Double or Nothing, Punk had to leave due to medical reasons and AEW crowned Mox as the interim champion. Everyone expected a clash between the two champions but it was a shocker when Punk started his promo by calling out Hangman Adam Page, and then proceeding to call him coward.
Ever since that promo rumour mills have been abuzz with stories talking about Punk’s attitude problem and how he is on the verge of quitting AEW. WWE social media trolls like Jobber Nation and AEW botches have worked overtime to tell everyone that CM Punk has always been a crybaby.
Punk vs Page 2.0?
So what exactly is the truth? Is CM Punk really burying Adam Page? Has he demanded to be on top of the food chain at AEW or else he will pack his bags and leave? The answers lie in the future but when it comes to the whole Adam Page story, one can see another long term storyline.
AEW has often worked wonders with long term storytelling. The dethroning of Kenny Omega by Adam Page was one such storyline that was a resounding success for AEW. With this whole Punk Page scenario, one can see the same card being played again. We all must remember that Page never got his rematch for the title. That story was left incomplete due to Punk’s injury. With this Punk promo, Tony Khan might have planted seeds for another redemption storyline for Adam Page. To be honest Page was hard done by some questionable booking in his first reign. This might be the story that will redo the mistakes of the past and elevate Page to even higher level as a main eventer.
Ever since his defeat at double or nothing, Page has become lost in the shuffle and is no longer a main-eventer. It is as if he has become an after thought. You don’t just disappear from the main event scene like the way Page has disappeared. It is very clear that we are witnessing another redemption story. Let’s just hope that this one is handled even more sensibly especially once the Hangman is back on top of the food chain.
The hate for CM Punk
This brings us to the question. Is CM Punk having an attitude problem? To be honest it is less of an attitude problem for CM Punk and more of an old hatred for Punk at the Titan towers. The best way to get back at your opponent is to discredit their champion. If that champion is CM Punk, then such rumour campaigns are bound to exist. Punk relationship with the McMahon Helmsley family is well known. There is too much animosity between both and that is manifesting in form of rumour mills. And as long as CM Punk will stay relevant in AEW, we can expect more such rumours.
